Orthopantomographic evaluation of position of the styloid process

Oceniano względną długość wyrostków rylcowatych na zdjęciach pantomograficznych w odniesieniu do otworów żuchwowych i kątów żuchwy 1692 osób leczonych stomatologicznie – 962 kobiet i 730 mężczyzn w wieku od 10 do 85 lat, średnia wieku 42,5 +/- 3,0 lat. W polu od nasady wyrostków do kątów żuchwy stwierdzono występowanie 774 wyrostków po stronie prawej i 702 wyrostków po stronie lewej. W 237 przypadkach po stronie prawej i w 177 przypadkach po stronie lewej na nasadę wyrostków nakładały się struktury kostne uniemożliwiające ich ocenę. W polu pomiędzy otworem żuchwowym a kątem żuchwy zaobserwowano występowanie 889 wyrostków po stronie prawej i 965 wyrostków po stronie lewej. W tych dwóch typach wyrostków stwierdzono zależność ich występowania od płci i wieku. W polu poniżej kąta żuchwy odnotowano występowanie 29 wyrostków po stronie prawej i 25 wyrostków po stronie lewej, również zależne od wieku badanych, niezależne od płci. W 219 przypadkach stwierdzono asymetrię długości wyrostków.

Summary 

The relative length of the styloid processes was evaluated on pantomographic films in relation to the mandibular foramina and to the mandibular angles in 1692 individuals undergoing dental treatment – 962 females and 730 males between the ages of 10-85 years, the mean age being 42.5 +/- 3.0 lat. In the region from the base of the processes to the angle of the mandible there were found to be 774 processes on the right side and 702 processes on the left side. In 237 cases on the right side and in 177 cases on the left, bony structures were superimposed on the base of the processes made it impossible to make an evaluation. In the region between the mandibular foramen and the mandibular angle there was found to be an incidence of 889 processes on the right side and 965 processes on the left side. In both these types of process there was found to be a dependence between their incidence that was based on sex and age. In the region below the angle of the mandible there were found to be 29 processes on the right side and 25 processes on the left side, which were also dependent on the age of those examined, and independent of sex. In 219 cases there was found to be asymmetry in the length of the processes.
