Antibiotic therapy in pediatric dental practice

Streszczenie

Racjonalna antybiotykoterapia powinna się opierać na aktualnej wiedzy klinicznej, mikrobiologicznej i farmakologicznej. Nadużywanie i niewłaściwe stosowanie antybiotyków przyczynia się do narastającej antybiotykooporności. Decyzja o przepisaniu antybiotyku przez lekarza stomatologii dziecięcej powinna być oparta na profesjonalnych rekomendacjach, poprzedzona wyborem właściwego antybiotyku i dobraniem prawidłowego dawkowania, odpowiedniego do leczonego zakażenia, wieku i masy ciała pacjenta.

Na podstawie przeglądu dostępnego, aktualnego piśmiennictwa omówiono istotne zagadnienia związane z antybiotykoterapią w praktyce lekarza stomatologii dziecięcej – wskazania i przeciwwskazania do jej stosowania i właściwe dawkowanie najczęściej stosowanych antybiotyków w zakażeniach zębopochodnych. Podjęto również problem nadużywania antybiotyków, którego następstwem jest narastająca antybiotykooporność, i niestosowania się do zaleceń lekarskich przez pacjentów.

Summary

Rational antibiotic treatment should be based on up-to-date clinical,  microbiological and pharmacological knowledge. Misuse and improper use of antibiotics contribute to the increase of antibody resistance. The decision to prescribe an antibiotic by the children’s dentist should be based on professional recommendation, preceded by the appropriate choice of antibiotic and choice of appropriate dosage, adequate  to the infection under treatment, age and body mass of the patient.

On the basis of the currently available literature there is a discussion of significant aspects connected with antibiotics in the clinical practice of the children’s dentist  – indications for and against their use and appropriate dosage of the most commonly used antibiotics in infections of dental origin. The problem of over-using antibiotics is also undertaken, whose consequence is the growth of antibiotic resistance, by not following the dentist’s advice by patients.
