The authors describe present-day possibilities for examining the thickness of gingiva and mobile mucosa that covers maxillary bone and mucosa of the hard palate, with particular consideration for the use of the ultrasonic method. They show the limitations and inadequacies of invasive biometry, regarded as the most accurate method of measuring the thickness of soft tissue in the oral cavity. Also showing the problems in obtaining repeatable results of ultrasonic examination of gingival thickness, they propose the taking of measurements in places different to where they are done currently.
